About Dr. Dominique McCowan

I grew up around the fossilized corals of the Devonian period (390 mya) and studied Biology (BSc), Chemistry (ASc) and Geology (minor) at Indiana University Southeast. I was a teaching and laboratory assistant for field ecology and field biology and held an internship with the local health department to study the ecology of mosquitoes and epidemiology of West Nile Virus. I moved to Australia for postgraduate studies and completed degrees in Tropical Marine Ecology and Fisheries Biology (Graduate Diploma in Research Methods) and Coral Reef Biology, Ecology and Physiology (PhD) with the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies @ James Cook University, Townsville. I was a teaching and research associate and laboratory manager throughout my candidature. I also completed postdoctoral scholarship on Coral Reef Ecology, Evolution and Geology (both with the ARC@JCU and independently).

I have conducted fieldwork in Hawaii, Florida, Bahamas, Dominica and every sector of the Great Barrier Reef. My research has studied the effects of climate change on coral species assemblages through ecological and evolutionary time by analyzing coral susceptibility and mortality to disturbance as well as the underlying drivers of variability in stress responses such as zooxanthellae density and/or clade, and completing comparisons on the different methods used to define bleaching in relation to potential lethality and/or recovery capabilities.

My unique perspective on the evolutionary history of reef corals and their resiliency through geologic time has led me to theorize about the potential for inevitable, pulsatic crypto-evolution with the Cnidarian polyp as the LUCA, and I’m currently taking the time to publish these results as well as many other theorems, with particular regards to the implications of the issue of miss-scaled discussion on Earth Sciences, the corrective action, the unifying field theory (change in organismal dimensionality) and Unified Field Research, which collects the different fields of science and unifies seemingly opposing views such as evolution and spirituality.
