Description

We are strengthening our math and English skills this summer and we are including some time each day for enrichment activities. How can knowing how to read and write numbers be important? Our students need to see successful leaders who look like them and came from their neighborhood and learn what steps they took to reach their goals. Knowing what it takes to trust a stranger and understanding who are community helpers in the neighborhood.

Who motivated you or guided you?
What steps did you take to understand they are not a stranger?
How did you use your specific experiences to feel safe?
What can they begin doing now to prepare for their own futures?

Outcomes

Please tell your career story as an inspiration for our students. We want students to begin to dream BIG. They need to know they can do so many fantastic and exciting things with their lives. They can solve problems, protect people, heal people and build. Understand the importance of stranger danger.
Our goal for the students is to see how others are alike and different. We want them to know that they can use circumstances some think are barriers to their advantage and grow and achieve so much. Understand the importance of being safe and feeling safe in their community.

Community helpers-lineman
We are doing a series on Community helpers for our younger students. We just had a hurricane with massive power outages in our area. We would love to have a session with a lineman or someone from the power company. It would be fascinating & timely to learn about what they do and how they help us!

Community Helpers and Heroes
I teach at an international school in Japan and we are studying about community heroes and helpers. The children can speak English quite well and we are looking to be able to interview and speak with a few people about their jobs, what they do and what it takes to be a hero in the community. The children will then give a presentation in English about the community hero they choose.

The focus of this session to help middle school students gain a broad awareness of what a community college school is. The session could include information about types of degrees, additional opportunities, student life, and why a student would possibly choose a community college over other postsecondary options.
